On June 7, 2017, I sat in an audience of over 2,000 people at the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church as I heard Jennifer Cramer share the work of Grace Children's Hospital and the great need in Haiti.
Seven years after Haiti's earthquake, Grace Children's Hospital still works in temporary quarters . . . unable to rebuild their damaged facility and still never turning a child away. Staff sometimes go unpaid and yet return to work because of the great need. Children are abandoned by desperate parents and the hospital, stretched so thin, still takes them in.
During Jennifer's presentation, everyone else in the room disappeared and my heart broke. Something had to be done. What could I do?
I admit I didn't give the rest of the service my complete attention. A plan was formulating on how I could be a part of the 50 for 50 drive, ensuring 50 more years of children's health care in Haiti.
I can walk. I can talk. I am good at design and social media. I have two very cute Yorkies that catch people's attention.
So Tinker, Bitsy, and I plan to walk 50 miles a week, wearing "Walking for Haiti" attire to raise funds and awareness for Grace Children's Hospital. Those 50 weekly miles will be tracked as a "virtual" walk to Haiti and to the various satellite sites Grace Children's Hospital services. I will use a blog and social media to chronicle our adventures and get the message out.
I will also offer myself (and cute yorkies if desired) to local and not so local churches and organizations to present my project and offer the opportunity to support our walk and therefore support Grace Children's Hospital.
Grace Children's Hospital is celebrating 50 years of providing healthcare to children and families in Haiti. After decades of extreme disasters, the hospital and its supporting board, International Child Care, is in critical need of financial help to survive.
I want to make sure that Grace Children's Hospital never has to close its doors or turn a child away.
Please help me, Bitsy, and Tinker to help GCH by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button above. PLEASE share this page with your friends and family.
